Ship 02 — the corrected prototype

Celebrity Apex

2020 · 130,818 GT2,910 GUESTS · 1,320 CREWGODMOTHER — RESHMA SAUJANI

Apex is not a new design. She is Edge's hull and Edge's tonnage with roughly two dozen small corrections applied after Celebrity watched two years of real guests using the prototype. Anyone who tells you Apex is significantly different from Edge is wrong; anyone who says they are identical is also wrong. She was also handed over by "virtual delivery" in March 2020 — signed for remotely because of the pandemic, the only ship in the class delivered that way, and her maiden voyage slipped fifteen months to Athens in June 2021.

The change list, deck by deck

WHAT APEX FIXED
  • Deck 15the Rooftop Garden gains canopies and windscreens — the direct fix for Edge's wind problem, and the single most practically useful change on the ship
  • Deck 5Eden's menu was rebuilt around flavour and regional sourcing rather than the original's more conceptual approach, and the production shows changed to culturally themed pieces that vary nightly
  • Deck 4Edge's Casino Bar becomes Craft Social, rebuilt around craft beer and comfort food
  • Deck 3the Shore Excursions desk becomes an iLounge; the under-used Grand Plaza Café is deleted for more atrium seating
  • Art swaps"Body of Knowledge" replaces Edge's horse in the Rooftop Garden; a hands-forming-a-heart piece replaces the butterfly "Dream Machine" on the pool deck; "Green Girl" appears outside Eden

Why this guide sailed her

THE NORWAY SHIP
  • Cold-water specialistApex summers in Southampton, and the Infinite Veranda and thermal suite matter far more in a fjord than in the tropics
  • ShowsCrystalize · Tree of Life · Rockumentary
  • Same 176 suites as Edge146 Sky, 16 Celebrity, 4 Royal, 6 Edge Villa, 2 Penthouse, 2 Iconic
A SPEC THAT IS NOT HERS — some pages credit Apex with a 110-foot, seventeen-million-pixel curved LED theatre wall. That belongs to Xcel. It appears on Apex pages only because Celebrity's boilerplate bleeds between ship listings. Apex has the Edge projection system, and everything wrong with Edge's Retreat is still wrong here: windowless lounge on 5, restaurant on 3, sundeck on 16.
