The signature:招牌: the White Pass & Yukon Route — a three-foot narrow-gauge railway blasted through the Coast Mountains in twenty-six months between 1898 and 1900, climbing nearly 3,000 feet in twenty miles on grades to 3.9%, round sixteen-degree cliff-hanging curves and through two tunnels. Some 35,000 men worked on it and 35 died; in 1994 it was named an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, the same register as the Panama Canal. The detail most guides omit: it was commercially obsolete before it was finished — the stampede had already moved on to Nome by the time the last spike went in. It survived on ore, then on the US Army, shut down completely in 1982, and sat dead for six years. The train you ride is not a preserved relic; it is a resurrection, and cruise ships are the reason it exists.
Self-drive — the finest, and the riskiest
Skagway is the only port on this itinerary with a road out. The South Klondike Highway climbs the same pass as the railway and crosses into British Columbia and the Yukon: 14.5 miles to the White Pass summit and the treeless moonscape beyond it, 20 miles to Canadian customs at Fraser — not at the summit sign, as people assume — 66 miles to Carcross, and about 72 to the impossibly blue Emerald Lake.
Cars are the constraint. Skagway has perhaps a couple of dozen rental cars against four or five ships a day, and there are documented reports of overbooking at both Avis and Sourdough — a confirmation is not the same as a car. Budget $180–250 a day, book months out and reconfirm by phone. And avoid the electric-car trap: the local EV fleet includes 175 miles a day, the Emerald Lake round trip is about 144, and there is effectively no charging on the pass. They are fine for the summit; they are the wrong tool for Emerald Lake.
The verdict, split three ways. Summit and back is 2.5–3 hours and completely safe — and a $200 rental beats two Summit Excursion tickets at $155 each, while letting you stop at Pitchfork Falls and Tormented Valley, which the train cannot. Carcross and back is 5–6 hours and committing. Emerald Lake is 6–8 hours — a long call only. Bring passports for everyone, tell the rental agency in writing that you are crossing into Canada, fill the tank in Skagway, and know that the afternoon southbound queue at US customs can run 45 minutes with four ships' worth of people in it. In July 2024 a rockslide closed the highway and stranded cruise passengers in Canada; they rejoined their ships in Haines. Turn around at a fixed clock time, not at a place.
What the locals do instead
- Lower Dewey Lake — a steep, short climb from the edge of town to a forest lake with a loop trail; free, and empty while four thousand people queue for the train
- Yakutania Point — flat, ten minutes across the footbridge, with the best view back at the ships
- The Gold Rush Cemetery — a walk or short ride out of town: Soapy Smith and Frank Reid, buried a few paces apart after shooting each other in 1898
- The fast ferry to Haines — a different town, a different valley, and the Chilkat eagle country, on a day when Skagway is at its most crowded
- Lower Dewey Lake——
- Yakutania Point——
EXPECTATION — Skagway is a town of about a thousand people that receives several thousand at a time; Broadway between the pier and Sixth is essentially a jewellery corridor owned by the cruise trade. The history is real and worth an hour at the Klondike Gold Rush park visitor centre — but walk one block off Broadway to find the town the residents actually use.
